Dear Jim,
My name is John Beck and I am currently taking lessons at your Deer Park location. Who I am is not as significant as the circumstances that brought me to your school. I was in involved in a situation in which a person drowned. Instead of boring you with the details, I have enclosed a copy of the newspaper article.
My daughter and I went into your facility and spoke to Rosette about possibly taking lessons. She made my daughter laugh and made me feel comfortable enough to sign up for lessons. I didn’t know what a two year old or a thirty year old man would get out of swimming lessons. I thought she was too young to learn and I was too old, but I had to at least try to make a difference.
We started our lessons on September 11, 2006 with Alexis. Alexis was very understanding and was able to teach us in a way that was fun while still conveying the lessons.
We never would have learned how to swim without the patience, understanding and instruction of Alexis and Rosette. To date, I have told my story about how I started taking swimming lessons with your business and two of my co-workers have signed up for lessons at other Saf-T swim facilities.
As of today, I am proud to say my daughter is no longer afraid of the water and in fact tries to swim during her bath time while singing ‘swimming in the tub, I’m swimming in the tub.” As for me, I am not the strongest swimmer but I know if I’m ever in that situation again I can make a difference instead of just making a phone call. I just wanted to say thank you.
Rosette and Alexis are a credit to your organization.

Sincerely,
John Beck

P.S. – If and when you have lifeguard classes, I plan to be the first to sign up!

A drowning at closed public pool
Maruful Haque’s family cannot believe the celebration they were planning for today, his 21st birthday, will now be spent in prayer and planning for his funeral.
Haque drowned early yesterday in a Babylon Town pool in Deer Park, despite the efforts of four Good Samaritans to save him, police said. The victim had been trespassing with three people he knew who fled the scene, police said.
Town Safety Officer John Beck was on routine patrol when he saw three youths at the State Trooper Fabio Buttitta Memorial Pool on Acorn Street at 2:20 a.m. As Beck approached the group to kick them out, he noticed Haque’s body at the bottom of the 13-foot dive pool, authorities said.
“It’s a terrible tragedy,” Town Supervisor Steven Bellone said last night. “The public safety officer did exactly what he’s supposed to do. Unfortunately it was too late for him to make a difference.” As the officer called for assistance, the trespassers fled but alerted four people hanging out nearby, outside the facility.
The Good Samaritans — three men and one woman — scaled the 10-foot fence and jumped into the pool to help pull out Haque. The officer performed CPR but it was too late, authorities said. Haque was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead.
“It was certainly heroic,” Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said of the actions of the group. “They tried everything they could to save this individual.” Police did not release their names.   The drowning does not appear to be suspicious, Fitzpatrick said, pointing out that Haque’s clothes were piled neatly to the side, his shoes and cell phone placed next to them. He said that suggests Haque went for a swim and wasn't pushed in.The investigation is continuing.
