How to Plan a Stress-Free Vacation for Your Family

Vacations are meant to be calming and restful, so why are they so hard to plan? If you feel that time away is sometimes more trouble than it's worth, you're not alone. From choosing a destination everyone will love to sticking to a budget and packing without forgetting a thing, vacationing doesn't seem so simple — especially with children.

But vacations don't have to (and shouldn't!) be a headache. These handy tips are your first step toward a stress-free vacation you'll actually love.

7 Ways to Plan a Fun Family Vacation

Whether you're heading to the other side of the world or staying close to home, keep these tips in mind throughout the vacation planning process.

1. Choose a Destination Together

Brainstorm with your travel companions a list of family-friendly destinations. Then put them to a vote (or choose one yourself). Involving your family in the decision-making process lessens the burden on you and is bound to make them more excited about the trip. It's a win-win!

2. Set a Realistic Budget

Budgeting for a vacation is key. Start by determining how much you can spend, then go from there. Account for transportation, accommodation, meals, entertainment, and emergencies. Having to budget might even give you ideas on where to go or where to stay.

3. Plan Activities for Everyone

The secret to keeping everyone happy is planning something for everyone. If your kiddos love the outdoors, why not book some swimming lessons at a hotel pool? And if you love art, add a pit stop at a museum.

4. Pack Wisely

One of the best packing tips is to make a packing list. Write down everything you'll need for the specific vacation you're going on (you wouldn't want to forget swimsuits and sunscreen for a beach vacay, right?). Then consider packing lighter. It'll be easier on your back not having to haul around a massive suitcase. Ask yourself, what can I leave out? Chances are, you'll be able to strike out quite a few items from that list.

5. Set Ground Rules

Ground rules make family trips run smoothly for everyone. For example, you could tell your children not to jump into the swimming pool unsupervised, while promising not to check your work email while away.

6. Remember Everyone's Tempers

You know your travel buddies better than anyone, so how can you prepare for less-pleasant moments? For example, if your kids get hangry before supper, pack extra snacks for when you're out and about. Or if your partner can't handle long walks, plan for breaks during your hikes. And if you need time alone to recharge, schedule time away. Making room for everyone's temperament will make it more enjoyable for everyone.

7. Keep Expectations in Check

Chances are your vacation won't go exactly according to plan. Flights get canceled, hotel rooms don't always match pictures, and the weather might not cooperate. But don't let those hiccups get you down. Accept that the unexpected will happen from the start and just focus on enjoying family time.
